Diverse Literature for Diverse Students

Help me give my students current, diverse, and relevant literature that challenges them to think critically!

My Students

I teach in a suburban school in a district with school choice. While some of my students come from middle-class families, many of them live in impoverished neighborhoods with little access to the tools they need to be successful in the classroom. The return to in-person learning after months of remote, isolated learning proves challenging.

Teaching students to collaborate is one of the key components of my classroom.

Students are encouraged to work together to investigate texts and craft various genres of writing. Additionally, we are a district are working to diversify the literature available to students.

My Project

Though we are open for fully in-person learning, we have many students who experience varied lengths of quarantine either due their own exposure or that of family members. The need is still very real, therefore, to provide the materials they need for engaging content and relevant learning.

Students are hungry to learn and to do so with materials in which they see themselves or relevant, current situations.

Adding more diverse literature that catches students' attention is essential to meet that need. A Long Way Down provides students with a intriguing scenario for which they receive no concrete resolution. This thought-provoking novel invites students to think critically.
