Help me give my students diverse literature that gives them both mirrors (a reflection of themselves) and windows (a look into other race, cultures, sexualities, and other identities).
I teach three sections of 7th grade literature to a diverse population of students. As a first year teacher, my classroom library is relatively scarce. My students read at least 20 minutes every day. I believe that reading everyday helps build students comprehension, vocabulary skills, and improving general knowledge. And they love it!
My goal is to get more books that are different genres, as well as more books that feature diverse characters.By reading different genres students expand their horizons and will gain new perspectives.
In addition, it is important for students to have a chance to read books with characters who look like them and their peers.
My school is extremely diverse in both race, culture, and socioeconomic status. When students can see themselves reflected in a book they are more encouraged to read it because they can relate. It is also helpful for students who may not be reflected in the book to read diverse literature to learn about different cultures and situations.
My Project
Students in my class read for 20-30 minutes every day plus they have the ability to check out books to take home. Help me provide books for them that reflect their identities and spark their interests!
My goal is to create a love of reading by the end of this year.
I have students constantly telling me they hate reading. I truly believe nobody can hate reading, they just have not found a book that has made them fall in love with reading yet. Help me bring a love of reading to my students this year! Please consider donating a book or two to my classroom. I promise you it does not go unnoticed....my students get extremely excited every time new books arrive. My students and I are very appreciative for any donations made to our library! Thank you in advance for your consideration!
