This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Let's be honest, Speech Therapy is not always a students' favorite part of their day. Believe it or not, working hard to progress towards and achieve speech and language goals is not always easy and fun!
When I introduce a storybook, however, my students perk right up and enthusiastically participate without even a nudge!
They love to use their imaginations, put themselves "in the characters' shoes", make guesses as to how our story could possibly end, and act out various parts of our story.
Our school, located in the Lower East Side of Manhattan, is one big bustling melting pot of families from many different backgrounds. It is my job, as an educator in today's world, to ensure that my students see themselves represented in the books that they read to continue to engage and inspire them in the work that they do. I cannot wait to see the joy on their faces when they see a character or situation in our stories that they can directly relate to!
My Project
In looking ahead to the coming school year, I am looking through a different lens and thinking about what my students could benefit from whether we are together in person, virtually, or a combination of the two.
One thing I know for certain is that no matter where, or how, I am providing speech therapy, having a diverse library to share with my students will inspire them and enhance their engagement.
My students come from a variety of backgrounds and cultures. They need to see themselves represented in what they listen to or read in order to further appreciate both their own, and others', cultures.
With your help, I will be able to diversify my speech and language therapy library in order to celebrate the many cultures my students represent, as well as allow my students to feel seen through the books we explore!
