Help me give my students what they need to fulfill all of their needs in my classroom. Allowing me to create hands on sensory activities specific to who they really are will give them confidence in themselves.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students make up a diverse class full of curious learners. We are in a Title I, high poverty area, in East Harlem, New York City, 98% of our students are eligible for free lunch.
My students are curious and excited learners who need our support to reach their full potential.
I teach a general education first grade class with 20 students. My students are kind, caring, and love to have fun while learning.
My goal as a teacher is to improve their reading, writing, math, but also social emotional skills this year. My favorite way to teach is when students are learning and don't even realize. I love games, songs, group activities, and using different tools to make each learning experience a fun and engaging activity.
My Project
I want a classroom where each student gets what they need. I am asking for sensory materials (such as squishy stars and seating) that would benefit students who need more stimulation when working in a whole group or individually. I am also asking for laminating paper to create materials and games that will last all year. I am asking for math materials as math can be challenging for students. Having hands on materials so that students can work with their own materials instead of just watching me would allow students in a general education classroom to get a more individualized experience during math lessons (ex- mini rekenreks and white boards).
I am putting a heavy focus this year on celebrating who my students are individually.
I am asking for materials, such as skin color paper and crayons, that allow students to feel represented with their own skin color through a variety of crafts.
I am also pushing a social emotional curriculum. It is developmentally appropriate in first grade for students to learn what it means to be a friend. It is also a time where students go through a range of emotions throughout the day. I want them to be comfortable with each one and to understand what they are feeling and why. I am teaching my students how to self regulate and deal with their emotions in a helpful and positive way. This is where the laminating paper, emotions board game, and create your own set of books would be beneficial. I am asking for materials that will help me to do this. Myself and my students would be grateful to receive these supplies.
