Help me give my students supplies to support their diverse learning styles and modalities such as sand, listening materials and flexible seating options.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
In our classroom no two days are ever the same and no two students are the same. There are a lot of the same skills we’re working on, though! My early learning support class is comprised of students with developmental disabilities. All of the students are developing language skills which will help them to be successful in kindergarten and beyond, and many of them are developing skills in English and a home language (Spanish or Amharic) simultaneously. Our school is 99% free and reduced meals in Washington DC.
My Project
In our self-contained special ED setting, we all learn best in different ways. Some of us learn best by listening, some by moving and manipulating objects and some by seeing ideas play out. We all learn best when we have options. With these materials I will allow students various ways to access content so that we all can learn. The kinetic sand and light table will provide a tactile experience while listening materials will allow students to use their auditory processing to engage with new information. Flexible seating options will help them to be successful when we’re all together. Other materials will allow students to visualize transitions to stay with the group.
