Diverse Learners Need Diverse Books!

Help me give my students diverse books, posters, and multicultural markers that show a variety of perspectives and experiences.

My Students

I have twenty-five Sheltered English Immersion (SEI) students in my classroom. My students are from a large, urban community that welcomes families from all over the globe. Our school brings a special blend of linguistic diversity, background knowledge, prior experiences, and culture. We are a Title I school in a low-income community. Free breakfast and free lunch are available to every child in our building each day.

My students are creative, clever, and very enthusiastic about learning.

The majority of my students read below grade level. They would benefit from a variety of classroom resources to help increase their success in school. My students need to have technology experiences that help foster 21st-century critical thinkers. I want all of my students to be able to use technology in our classroom daily.

My Project

We all know how important it is for children to feel represented in their classrooms. I want to provide my students with materials that show a variety of perspectives and experiences. I will be able to conduct active learning through in-person and remote read-alouds, with these diverse books. These materials in our classroom library will allow my students to have a multicultural and diverse collection readily available.

These new books for our recently established library nook will allow my students access to books with racially diverse characters, just like they are.

The best way to increase reading ability is to read more, and by creating a welcoming and comfortable space, my students will grow stronger in reading. Students will also feel more embodied in our classroom. Having these titles will help to create empathy and understanding among students of different backgrounds. All students will be able to read these books to celebrate the racial diversity of our classroom community. Also, I would like to make our learning environment as respective as possible by adding diverse visual decorations such as posters, a welcoming mat, and bulletin boards that have images and colors that reflect my students skin color and culture.
