Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students walk into our classroom every day full of life, ready to learn, and excited about their day.

I teach at a Title I school in Texas where 100% of our students receive free breakfast and lunch.

My school is in a small district in a rural community. Most of my students are recent immigrants from Mexico, who are barely learning the English language. My little 1st graders love reading books and listening to stories. Despite so many hardships, my students are eager to learn and do their best. As their teacher, I feel it is my job to provide them with a safe and loving environment where they can grow as learners.

My Project

Our school and my students will benefit greatly from reading these diverse books. The books purchased will help my students develop their reading and language skills but more importantly they will teach my students about the often confusing world around them.

We will use these books in our classroom during our very loved literacy block helping my students to see the value of diversity.

My students will not only strengthen their reading and language skills but will come to better understand their world. The books we have selected are very diverse and span a range of topics including: understanding cultures and languages, understanding refugee experiences, and ways in which race, class, language and culture influence our way of thinking. My students need to understand how important it is to value and respect each other and how diversity strengthens our communities.

Time and time again research supports using picture books to teach reading and language comprehension skills. My inquisitive students often ask me about worldly events and look to the books in our classroom to help them understand their world. At this point, my classroom library is not very diverse and does not represent my students very well. The books I have chosen in this project reflect the diverse world my students live in. These amazing books will help my students understand and relate to their world.
