This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
As a teacher in a low-income/high-poverty area, my students are faced with many challenges both in and out of the classroom. Every child in our school receives free or reduced lunch, and a large percentage of students are considered homeless. Despite this, my students are excited be part of a learning community where they feel safe and cared for.
Our classroom is an area where students are encouraged to work hard, collaborate with one another, and communicate clearly.
I encourage learning through exploration and value the intrinsic curiosity of my students.
My Project
I am requesting a set of four diverse dolls for our dramatic play center. Our dramatic play center is a very exciting area of our classroom. Through pretend play, the children are working on building language skills, social skills, and foundational skills for literacy and math. The dramatic play area is often one of the first places where my English Learners will try out their new words, and where I often hear more conversation from my students with specific language goals.
My classroom is full of curious, racially diverse scholars!
They deserve to have dolls that look like them!Currently, our dolls for dramatic play are not racially diverse. Providing the children with dolls that look like them will increase engagement at this center and encourage more children to participate in pretend play.
