My Students
I am an ESE (special education) teacher at a K-8 center in Miami. I teach and support students that have learning difficulties and/or disabilities in all subject areas and grade levels in our K-8 school. My school is a Title I school, which means that about 99% of the students at my school receive free or reduced-price lunch due to their low socioeconomic status. The school is in a high poverty neighborhood so many of my students come from families who struggle financially. As a result, my students endure more problems than average children, and these problems interfere with and hinder their learning.
My Project
With the 10 different ethnic dolls, my students will experience a representation of diversity in the classroom. They will acknowledge and express acceptance of the cultural diversity of the families in our community. The diverse of the dolls will showcase a tremendous role in the social and emotional development of all my students. Looking at dolls that represent them will make them feel better about themselves. Seeing dolls that look like them will help them feel loved and respected. My students will understand they are not alone and that in our classroom we accept all students. Interacting with the dolls will ensure that they are viewing and accepting the things that make each culture unique. The dolls are multiethnic, which will expose my students to diversity as well.
