Diverse Computer Science High School Learners Need Headphones
Help me give my students headphones, adapters, and storage boxes to create an extraordinary year learning computer science programming and now embarking on learning robotics.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Our school is in its 11th year and their computer science classrooms are in heavy need of basic supplies to kick off this year. Classroom headsets usually last, if you are lucky, about two years. As the CTE Computer Science teacher, Work-Based Learning Coordinator and Department Leader of BASE's Computer Science department, I ask for your help in donating funding for headphones that will be used across two classrooms and ultimately 14 classes (25-30 students in each class) and distributed by myself and 2 other computer science teachers to be used within their classes. We work primarily with MacBook Airs and the extra adaptors will serve as an additional connectivity option if the headphone port is unusable. The storage bins will help with general classroom supplies.
We teach our students software development, design thinking, user experience and user interface design, Python, Java, C++ and data applications.
Now we are embarking on teaching Robotics and definitely need more specific supplies for that as well, but I would like to first start off with the essentials. These headphones will be used by our diverse learners in these computer science elective classes that they take over all four years of their high school experience who sometimes need to focus on their work by tuning out other distracting sounds around them, need translation services because English isn't their first language and they need to be able to hear it alone and/or without embarrassment, need to revisit a training video or auditory notes, and sometimes they need to be able to conference with experienced guest speakers in the tech industry who cannot appear in person, but choose to converse with our students over Zoom and headphones minimize the feedback noise and allow for a more in tune focus.
