Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach at a small K-8 school in a bustling city. Coming from a variety of countires, home languages and family backgrounds, the students and teachers have formed a strong learning community. My students are curious, kind and funny! They greet me each day with a story to tell and new questions about the world around them. They inspire me everyday!
My Project
Our classroom community is culturally and linguistically diverse. Please help our classroom library reflect our classroom community.
Representation matters!
Having a diverse classroom library will allow students to see their own identities reflected in the books that they read. Students will see that their cultures and lived experiences are valued.
Equally, important, is the need for students to see cultures, races and genders different than their own represented in the books that they read. "Diverse books allow students to learn from other people’s experiences. Authentic literature is at the heart of students’ understanding of the human experience." - Margarita Engle
