Diverse Classroom Library: Fiction & Nonfiction Texts

My Students

My students come to my class eager to learn despite facing adversities and overcoming challenges in their lives. My students live in a small bayside community that was severely impacted by Hurricane Sandy several years ago. My students are still dealing with the physical and emotional effects from this devastation. I teach in a low-income school district, which is also a Title I and focus school for the New Jersey Department of Education. Many of my students are being raised in single-family homes and 70% of students receive free lunch.

With the right mentors and resources, my students have the power to change the world.

My students are inspirational, resilient, and eager. I believe all students deserve a chance to learn and be given the same opportunities as their more privileged peers.

My Project

Reading is essential to our lives, but motivating adolescences to read can be challenging. Entering the 8th grade, the majority of my students are not reading on grade level. It is essential that I provide a variety of adolescent literature and informational texts to accompany, support, enrich, and extend topics across all content areas, as well as include all genres and varying readability levels. Our students want to read about issues that they can relate to in their lives. They need significant and meaningful options for relatable texts to read throughout the year. It is important to provide my students with literature and nonfiction texts that can encourage them to be powerful individuals.
