Reading is essential to our lives, but motivating adolescences to read can be challenging. Entering the 8th grade, the majority of my students are not reading on grade level. It is essential that I provide a variety of adolescent literature to accompany, support, enrich, and extend topics across all content areas, as well as include all genres and varying readability levels. Our students want to read about issues that they can relate to in their lives. They need significant and meaningful options for relatable texts to read throughout the year. It is important to provide my students with literature and nonfiction texts that can encourage them to be powerful individuals.
