Diverse Classroom, Diverse Needs!

Help me give my students good headphones and differentiated and long lasting task cards.

My Students

I teach 18 second graders in a Title I school. Of the eighteen, eight are English Language Learners, two of which are recent immigrants from Central America.

Their eagerness and willingness to work hard is infectious, and I'd love to have every resource possible to help meet their needs.

Each day, our literacy block allows for independent and group work time. This is helpful in providing instruction for each student's diverse needs. The writing center allows students to express their creativity through writing. Word work centers provide a chance for students to practice phonics skills, while the listening centers help them listen to reading, as well as record their reading to work on fluency.

With such diversity, my students' needs are varied and different. However, they all have one thing in common, the desire to become fluent readers and ardent mathematicians!

My Project

Differentiating instruction is key to reaching every student in a culturally diverse classroom. Fifty percent of my students are English language learners, with two of them recent migrants with little to no English. Listening to RAZ Kids and other reading programs is essential for these students to help them build their vocabulary while working on correct pronunciation.

With headphones, students will be able to independently follow along without disturbing other students who may be working on other differentiated activities.

Task cards are a good way of practicing skills taught, and students can work with them independently during math workshop. A good laminator will ensure that task cards are well-made and will stand the test of time.
