My Project
My 9th grade ELA students at Copper Canyon High School are a remarkable group of young scholars with diverse backgrounds, experiences, and identities. Many come from low-income households and face unique challenges, yet they bring resilience, curiosity, and a passion for learning into the classroom. Some are English learners, working hard to master a new language while engaging deeply with literature. Their varied cultural perspectives enrich discussions, fostering a classroom environment where different voices and stories are valued. Despite obstacles, they are eager to grow as readers, writers, and critical thinkers, making every lesson an opportunity for meaningful learning and connection.
Literature circles in high school ELA classrooms foster student engagement, critical thinking, and empathy, especially when using diverse books.
By reading stories from various cultures, perspectives, and experiences, students develop a deeper understanding of the world and their peers.
These small-group discussions encourage student-led analysis, improving communication skills and allowing for multiple interpretations of a text. Diverse literature also helps students see themselves reflected in stories while exposing them to new ideas, promoting inclusivity and a richer learning experience.
Having an iPad in the classroom would allow me to move freely and engage more actively with students rather than being confined to my desk. With an iPad, I can take attendance, update grades, display lesson materials, and monitor student work in real time while circulating the room. This mobility will allow me to join their literature circles, provide immediate feedback, and facilitate discussions without disrupting student-led learning. Additionally, I can use digital tools like annotation apps, collaborative documents, and timers to enhance engagement and keep students on task. By being present and accessible, I can better support student learning, address questions as they arise, and create a more dynamic, interactive classroom environment.
