Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I am looking to complete my classroom library with Newbery Medal winning or honored books as well as books from diverse authors that my students have deemed some of their favorite. This includes Mildred Taylor and Francisco Jimenez whose series are about their families and how they overcame prejudice, discrimination, poverty and racism to succeed. Family values such as hard work, honor, respect, and faith are modeled well.

My students come from diverse backgrounds.

We are learning that while two people may be of the same culture, their experiences and traditions may not be exactly the same. Also, Latinx is a blanket label and someone from Mexico may have little in common with someone from the Dominican Republic. We are exploring what makes them unique as well as what we all have in common so that we can appreciate, honor and respect the differences.
