Help me give my students books that will offer a diverse representation in my classroom library and allow my students greater access to high-quality books with diverse characters.
I work at a school where our scholars do not have access to books that contain characters that look like them, explain and represent their beliefs, show their cultural practices, and honor their diversity. Diverse books teach people about the importance of culture. They help promote respect and empathy for all types of people. Each and every student deserves to see themselves in books and to relate to the characters. Multicultural literature serves as a powerful tool in enabling students to gain a better understanding of both their own culture and the cultures of others. Through this deeper knowledge, relationships can be strengthened, bridging the gap between students from diverse cultural backgrounds.
My classroom library currently contains some non-fiction books and some novels, but they are old and do not contain diverse characters.
I am hoping to create a library with high interest books and diversity. This project aims to add diverse nonfiction and novels to the mix.
