My students inspire and surprise me all of the time! I have the privilege of working with small groups of learners who work hard, collaborate, and continue to build their reading stamina and language skills every day. We live in a small mountain community in Northern California. My first through fifth-grade students, many of whom are Dual-language Learners, need additional support with reading, writing, and language development. They thrive in learning environments where they feel safe taking risks; where they perceive reading and writing as positive and attainable; and where they know their voices will be heard and honored by those around them.
My students LOVE finding engaging books that they can read themselves, as well as read-alouds that they can relate to; they need more books that they can see themselves in, as well as access to learn about other ways of being in this world.
These children are passionate, kind humans who want to do right within their community, as well as who seek ways to make positive change and work for equity in this world.
My Project
Our students are amazing, interesting, complex individuals who make this world a better place! We want to provide them with literature that inspires them, and helps them continue to grow and feel proud of who they are, as well as learn more about others who share this planet. Some of our readers struggle to find books that match both their areas of interest AND their reading levels, and, they also sometimes have a hard time finding books that represent a wide range of different life experiences, and ways of being in this world. We want to reflect OUR students in the books we offer to them, as well as expand their world views to increase their understanding of those who are unlike themselves.
We would like to build text sets that support diversity, focus on social justice, and help us meet our school-wide goals of focusing on social-emotional development, empathy-building, and kindness.
Teachers will be able to check out individual titles to use for read-alouds, or multiple texts to supplement their themed book bins for children to read independently during social studies and/or Reader's Workshop. One of our main goals will be to include texts that are high-interest, but at lower reading levels, so our struggling readers (in literacy intervention and resource) can relate to what their peers are reading, as well as find topics that match where they are, developmentally.
By expanding our intervention library to include more books that represent our students, we will be able to provide more options to our students; by having more options available, we will be able to hook more readers.
