Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
The students in my school come from many diverse backgrounds and the population is mostly economically struggling. Many of my students have social-emotional struggles, have decreased confidence, and face many other daily challenges other than being a developing adolescent. I would like to make their learning experience more comfortable and engaging. They are hard-working and overcome so many hurdles every year. My students look forward to coming to school for safety and security and I would like to offer them a little more.
My Project
My students have a real thirst for reading, but struggle with finding the right books. They love reading books that are relevant to their lives and the world around them! These books will continue to enhance the print-rich classroom that I strive to create. My classroom library is a place that my students really enjoy. Every student book that is placed in my library is treated with love and care, and they are thankful for the opportunities to read.
We are building our library to include titles that highlight civil rights and diverse struggle throughout history and vivid graphic novels.
Cultivating reading through offering variety of choices is so important. All of these books have been chosen with my students in mind and many students have been asking for these titles and are starting to track certain authors.
With these new books, my students will be able to choose from a large selection that will allow them to read independently on their own level. They will also be able to choose books that interest them and hold a mirror to their nationality and lifestyle. The best way to increase reading ability is to read more, and these books will continue to help my students grow stronger in reading. My students already have shown an astonishing interest in independent reading, and this project will only help enrich their experiences with developing their passion for reading!
