Diverse Books for Native Youth!

My students need more books by Native authors so that their Native identity is represented in literature, but they also need to expand their world view and open their eyes global cultural diversity.

My Students

Students in my school are in grades 7-12. Located in southern Arizona, 99% of students are enrolled tribal members, and 85% are eligible for free or reduced lunch. Because the literature that they have read in the past was almost entirely from non-Native authors and centered around non-Native themes, students are very excited about exploring the words and ideas of Native Americans from a multitude of tribes. Native American literature could have an enormous impact on the lives of my students. In addition to works by Indigenous authors, students would like to explore contemporary young adult fiction from notable Latinx, African-American, and Asian-American authors, as well as young adult fiction from around the globe.

The students want to understand how their own stories fit into the world of stories, through the global connection of youth culture.

The reservation can feel a little bit isolated, and bringing the world to the students through literature, together with highlighting Native literature, can help the students at my school articulate their identities not only as Tohono O'odham, but also as global citizens.

My Project

Students living on the reservation need books that reflect their many identities. First, it is imperative that students have books written by Native authors, so that they see the possibility that they, too, could be a writer. Native authors are incredibly important role models for Native students. However, it is also hugely important that these students have access to the wider world of literature, to be able to find a connection with youth across the globe.

Sherman Alexie said, "Seeing myself inside a book made it easier to see myself inside characters that weren’t Native; Because if I can be a part of one book then maybe I can be a part of all of them." *

By first creating a library and classroom set collection of culturally relevant literature, we allow the students to connect with literature on the basis of culture. By then creating a collection of literature to reflect many of the students' other identities (being multi-racial, being a foster child, having a disability, being queer, et cetera), we are opening the door for students to be able to connect with characters across cultures. This is the foundation for building connections and compassion, for feeling a part of global citizenship despite being physically isolated. Literature, both local and global, has the ability to change these students' lives.
