My Students

I teach reading in grades 3-5 in a small school district in New York State. My students come from diverse backgrounds but have two things in common. One, they all have an inner desire to become better readers and two, they have difficulty finding books that interest them. One reason they loose interest is because the main characters are not diverse like they are. These books would help them see characters from diverse backgrounds just like them.

My Project

My students love to read and eagerly await to see the "Library is Open" sign so they can find that perfect boo; a book that will grab their attention and take them into the story. I've noticed that this is becoming more and more difficult lately. My students are looking for books with more diverse characters; characters that look, talk and act like them. The class library is lacking in the books my students are looking for.

I know these books will make a world of difference to my readers.

They'll finally have the books they've been looking for. Books with diverse characters that are at their just right reading level.
