Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Every child wants to be in a classroom where they feel excited to be there. My goal is to light a fire for learning with my students, while encouraging them to be the BEST that they can be. My school has worked with our families and students to ensure they are all able to connect virtually. I offer daily assistance to my students, interact, and work together with parents and students through video. I am able read picture books with my students through recorded videos and live online meetings. Picture books are building blocks that promote literacy, vocabulary skills, sentence structure and story analysis.

I want my students to feel empowered by diverse characters in high-quality children's books, relating and learning through little boys and girls who look like they do.

Our school is a Title I school with more than 87% of our student population on free or reduced lunches. My students range in skills when entering Kindergarten. My students come from homes that are very diverse. They come from families who speak only English, some who speak multiple languages, and some who speak no English at all. They keep me laughing and teach me something new every day.

My Project

I will use these pictures to read with my students virtually. My students will connect with me via video conferencing and hear and see my reading these beautiful stories. I want my students to see themselves represented during our school day, whether that is in person or online.

When students read and look at books with characters who look like themselves, they feel valued; their lives and stories are important.

My goal is for my students to see themselves in their learning, to read about people and experiences that are real to them; these picture books will help me do that.
