My students are a very diverse group of energetic, hard-working, empathetic 4th graders who are ready and eager to learn, despite facing challenges that are out of their control. Approximately 97% of our families are eligible for free and reduced-priced meals.
My Project
My school serves one of the most impoverished areas in our district. Families have limited access to resources. I want to diversify my classroom library by adding more read alouds that include characters my students can relate to. I also want to give each of my students a chapter book as we begin the year with remote learning.
Engaged students are successful students.
These books will be used as read alouds and as a novel study during our remote learning. Not only will these books engage my students, they will also build stamina, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension.
They will encourage students to see the world through different lenses, embrace their own cultures by reading about characters that are like them, build empathy towards others, and help them continue to grow in their ongoing understanding of diversity and inclusion.
Any donations received will foster a strong, caring classroom community which is integral to becoming the compassionate leaders and citizens that I know my students can be.
