This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Students come from all walks of life at our school. We celebrate diversity on a daily basis and look for ways to create a learning environment that appeals to all types of learners. We celebrate various learning styles and embrace the differences that make us all unique. This year our class includes multi-language learners, students with hearing impairments and students benefiting from various sensory integration strategies. We are nestled in a south side Chicago neighborhood, walking distance from a large university.
My Project
My students need more picture books that empower and promote children of color, young girls, and diverse families. Classroom books serve as one of the first entry points for children to interact with the world around them.
Diverse reading material in the classroom library helps children to explore themselves and learn about others.
Many books for young learners feature white characters, or ambiguous animal characters and provide little opportunity for diversity in texts.
The books I have requested tell stories that feature people of color, strong female leads, and show a range of family structures. The books will help students hear and read stories cross culturally. Students will have an opportunity to develop a deeper understanding of and appreciation for diversity and difference.
