I teach 25 amazing first graders in a predominantly African-American, Title I, inner-city Baltimore school. We have many wonderful programs at our school, including a recreation center and a Judy Center. My students are eager to learn and are very creative, resilient, and kind. Although my students come in ready to learn every day, they don't always have the materials necessary to complete all of our tasks for the day or the things that we need to keep our classroom clean and healthy. My students and I would be so grateful to receive new materials that they can use to help them prepare for second grade and beyond!
My Project
This project features a collection of over 20 books that highlight important figures in African-American history from slavery to the present. Students will be able to learn the amazing story of Henry Box Brown, discover the Underground Railroad with Harriet Tubman, and learn about the childhood of a young Malcolm X. In addition to books that feature prominent figures in African-American history, the project also includes fictional characters of color chronicling their everyday experiences such as getting a haircut and spending time with their siblings. Students will learn about so many important people in their history including the ladies of Hidden Figures and many many more!
