Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are resilient first graders from an urban Title 1 school. Our school is a TK-8 school that exhibits our core values of community, compassion, curiosity, courage and grit daily through our interactions with students, teachers and families.
The joy of reading flourishes in first grade as they gain the confidence to read on their own.
From the way they pick up a book for the first time to the ones who have read the story so many times that the binding begins to wear. As a classroom we create an environment where reading is something to be enjoyed and excited about.
My priority as a first grade teacher is to foster a love of learning and reading in a community were students feel safe to make mistakes and grow from them. To reach this goal, we need materials and supplies that will ensure that all learners who enter my classroom leave with an equitable education, especially in reading, ready to thrive in 2nd grade.
My Project
My first graders grow their love of reading in first grade. We independently read, read with a partner and I read aloud to them. This year I made a conscious effort to choose and buy picture books to read aloud that reflected the students I had in my class. I wanted my students to understand that they can be anything they want.
We need diverse books like these to continue growing a library as diverse as my students in our classroom.
I want to provide my students with even more literature that reflects their cultures. My students need diverse books to not only see themselves but also to learn from each other about different cultures. We also need leveled books so students can choose books at their own level to continue their growth as a reader. I also want to incorporate more nonfiction reading by getting a subscription for my students to TIME for Kids. Through this subscription we will get to practice reading a different form of media, a magazine, and learn about relevant topics such as drones, fungus, coding and weather.
Reading is a superpower, help my first graders achieve their superpower by getting us diverse books!
