I currently am teaching Kindergarten students who are recent arrivals to NYC and are English Language Learners. Last year, I had 25 students from ( a variety of cultures) within my classroom. I am always looking for ways to keep all of my students actively engaged in meaningful learning - connecting to their families, heritages and cultures, especially now during virtual learning.
Our wonderful school consists of 670 students in grades K-5 with highly effective teachers that are always looking to improve their teaching practices.
We have students with many different backgrounds and cultures. We have been named a Recognition School for New York State because of the progress and achievement of our hard-working students. Students and teachers are learning new methods of instruction to teach and learn using technology remotely. Due to the effects of COVID19, our "Star" students have been learning on Google Classroom and Google Meets. This year, our opening is with great concern for health and safety and many families have selected a remote learning structure. My class consists of 25 kinders who are entering a virtual classroom instead of a red brick building. We need different materials to continue to teach effectively.
My Project
I want my class to be able to relate and learn from literature including many different races, cultures, and family types. I want students to fall in love with reading and I think being able to relate to a book is one way for that to happen!
I would like to connect my students to characters, stories and challenges that they can relate to.
My students have an incredible curiosity and passion for reading and learning. I'd love to support their love of literature with diverse books that reflect their backgrounds. Multicultural books feature characters of various colors or ethnicity. They may share various beliefs or customs of a particular culture.
Our shelves should have books in which children can see themselves and the diversity of the world. I want my students to feel empowered by diverse characters in high-quality children's books, relating and learning through little boys and girls who look like they do.
