My students need more diverse books in their classroom such as Crossover and Hidden Figures which introduce familiar characters and stories to my students while also introducing them to new narrative styles.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
As a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Often, my classroom is the only place where they have access to books and other reading materials.
My students are intensely excited by reading but see few characters that look or act like them.
Most of my students and families hail from the Dominican Republic and speak Spanish as a first language. Though I have so many students that are Dominican, my library doesn't reflect the diversity that I see every day in my classroom.
Many of the books that I have are focused on characters who live lives very differently than my students do. I want them to be both excited by reading and able to see their lives reflected in literature.
It is also my goal to expose my students to different experiences that they may not experience in their homes or neighborhoods. I not only want to provide them with characters that look and act like them but I want to show them how diverse the world can be.
My Project
Once a week students take a choice book home to read and dive deeper into themselves. In order to build a love of reading they need books that interest them.
Books like Crosover and Booked introduce my kids to narratives they will enjoy but help them learn new ways of experiencing those narratives.
Stories like Auggie and Me and Hidden Figures introduce them to familiar characters that are different from themselves in new ways.
Literature should be a reflection of reality and these kids are looking for books that show them experiences that are similar to their own and maybe not so similar. They are eager to learn about the world around them and through these books they will be able to.
