Diverse Biographies: Past Inspirations & Future Possibilities

Help me give my students & colleagues books that represent a range of ideas, experiences, and perspectives! I would especially like to include accessible biographies that are not typically included in classroom collections.

My Students

My students inspire and surprise me all of the time! I have the privilege of working with small groups of learners who work hard, collaborate, and continue to build their reading stamina and language skills every day. We live in a small mountain community in Northern California. My first through fifth-grade students, many of whom are Dual-language Learners, need additional support with reading, writing, and language development. They thrive in learning environments where they feel safe taking risks; where they perceive reading and writing as positive and attainable; and where they know their voices will be heard and honored by those around them.

My students are eager learners who speak a variety of languages, demonstrate unique learning needs, and respond well to rich & engaging instructional approaches.

My students have loving, supportive families who want them to succeed, so we want to provide them with as many tools as possible to help them do so during distance learning! (We all know that this is a daunting task, for a variety of reasons, and we want to remove as many obstacles as possible!)

My Project

I am dedicated to continuing to grow our school's shared collection of diverse books. We are so fortunate to have more representation and a range of voices within the texts, as well as from those who have written and illustrated the books that we've gathered.

I have noticed, as students are selecting books for their annual biography reports, there is a limit to the representation of voices and experiences we can offer to students.

I would like to continue to grow our current collection and feel that these books are a step in the right direction.

It is inspiring to see that there continue to be books published from a wide range of voices and experiences and look forward to adding more for those in the future. I sincerely appreciate the donations that I have received in the past and thank you in advance for your support of this project as well. You make such a difference to our school community, and this will have positive ripple effects throughout our world.
