Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My campus serves students from 3 years old up to 5th grade. Over 85% of our students are from low-income households. In addition to our robust Dual Language: Two Way program, about 45% of our population are English Language Learners. These are resilient children consistently putting their best foot forward with an enthusiasm for learning. As the new campus librarian, I couldn't feel more welcomed by my students.
The sheer joy I've seen when a student learns that we have books on their favorite topic in the library has been infectious.
When a new PreK 4 student arrived on her first day of school this year, she was all smiles beneath her mask as she very excitedly shared that she was getting to learn today and couldn't wait to share it all with her little sister. These children are enthusiastic readers and information seekers and I'm so very proud to be their librarian.
My Project
The focus on equity in education has led to a number of teachers requesting new titles to use with their students. I want to provide more titles to students with main characters, settings, and plots that reflect their own experiences.
Being able to see themselves in the main character or setting of a book can help students draw on background knowledge, make inferences and predictions, and find deeper connections to the text.
By providing students and staff members with diverse and inclusive titles, I can support my students' love of reading and their literacy skills.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
