Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Our school in lower Manhattan has students from so many backgrounds, from all over NYC and from all over the world. In the English department we try to have a curriculum that includes some classics, but also contemporary works that reflect the experiences of our students: Amy Tan, Junot Diaz, Ocean Vuong, Celeste Ng, Thi Bui, Ta-Nehisi Coates, Jhumpa Lahiri among others.
I have so many amazing students who are voracious readers, and I am attempting to fill my classroom bookshelf with many relevant, diverse, beautiful, interesting and inclusive works of fiction and non-fiction to inspire a new generation of writers and readers to read in their free-time, not just for my class!
