Help me give my students more high interest and diverse books. Our classroom library is very sparse, so increasing the selection will increase the books they can have available to them in their book boxes.
This is my first year teaching 2nd grade and I am loving it! My students are spunky with a ton of great ideas. We have just transitioned to being in school 5 days a week in early November. However, the pandemic has created challenges in regards to a slide in academic progress and a limit in resources.
My Project
I was given two weeks notice that I would be teaching 2nd grade in a new school due to the pandemic. My district made huge efforts to keep class sizes small, but to do so had to pull from STEM specialists and math interventionists. I was happy to help out and meet my classroom of 2nd graders, but I have no library for them to book shop.
Giving my diverse students the opportunity to read books that reflect them as individuals, the communities they belong to, an are of high interest is my number one priority.
Without a diverse library, students are missing out on developing that love of reading that is so important. The pandemic and school closures has clearly impacted the learning of my kiddos, and I want to do everything I can do reignite their love for school and especially reading.
