My Project

I work with students with severe autism and intellectual differences. My specialized area targets communication and this includes participation in the class. Many of the students I work with are non-verbal and some use devices, but some just need to be able to participate in the slightest of ways, whether it is starting the music or turning on the party/ disco lights for a drama class or make choices in an art class.

These assistive technology devices will give the students I work with the opportunity to have them on hand without having to wait for them to be approved by the district level, and they can be used with multiple kids instead of only being allocated to one student (which is the method used in district).

Most importantly, I am requesting these materials to increase the participation of students with communication disorders and needs in classroom activities to promote academics, socialization and fun, as well as give neurotypical peers and staff exposure to assistive technology to make it more normalized and allow teachers the opportunity to learn to use and implement them in the co-taught classrooms.

The students I work with have been isolated for so long. I want to develop this project to make them feel more of part of the learning community and have fun for all doing it.
