My Students

The students in my class love to read. A special part of the day they look forward to is our book club and partner reading time. They adore talking about stories and learning from them. We have great discussions about how they feel and the world during reading time. They love seeing real life situations and characters they can relate to.

I want school to be a safe place for all children, where they feel welcomed, valued and represented.

We are in a small rural school district. Though our student population is primarily white, we do have lots of children of color at our school. I want all my students to see themselves reflected in our books and curriculum.

My Project

Many of the books on my list are counter-narratives, books that show children of color being children. Many of these books let my students see themselves in stories about regular kids and/or see others who are different than them doing the same things they do. Some books talk about history, activism, and what they can do to bring change to the world. Both types of books would be beneficial to my classroom.

Books like these will allow deep discussion about big issues like culture, poverty, and race.

These are important discussions to have with children of all ages, and at eight and nine years, I feel my students are ready to delve in and talk about these tough ideas. Through my research about counter-narratives and books about showing diverse stories, I realized I lacked books like these in my classroom. I would love to have my classroom library more representative of the children I teach and the world around them.
