My students need books that keep them interested and connect them to popular culture, including the Divergent, Hunger Games and Maze Runner trilogies.

My Students

Since I'm the only language arts teacher for the entire fifth grade it's my job to keep the students interested in reading materials that really grab their attention. To do this I have to use pop culture.

I teach in a Title I school in a very small town.

It is a pre-k to 8 school so resources are scattered. I teach 5th grade language arts and social studies to 50 students. The range of intelligence is drastic from class to class because I have as many as six students in one class with learning disabilities. I have no tutors and no teacher aids. Many of my students cannot stand to read or simply refuse.

My Project

The point of this project is simple . . . just to read. A lot of times students only read books that their peers are reading or talking about. These particular books are ones that EVERY child in my class seems to be talking about and getting excited about reading - the Divergent, Hunger Games and Maze Runner trilogies and The Fault in Our Stars. This is the type of thing I want to harness and be able to express the importance of reading. These books help to keep them connected to the fast paced society we live in but also give them a chance to learn the full story before the movies are released. These books are cool and I want them to have a copy available for when the library is all out.

Each of these books will be placed in my classroom library and be available for easy checkout.

They will be used for Accelerate Reader goals, book clubs, reports and pleasure reading. It is my hope that these novels will grab their attention enough to realize that reading is GREAT and will continue in the habit!
