Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach students in a public school in a diverse neighborhood in the Bronx. Our neighborhood is low income, but full of hardworking families who want their children to succeed. The overwhelming majority of my students are English Language Learners, whose English proficiency covers a wide range from "entering" to "expanding" (and everything in between).
Our students love to be interactive with their learning- they're excited by anything "different" that engages them!
On the whole, our students are eager to learn, improve themselves, and show their best.
My Project
This subscription to StoryWorks Jr. would give our students exposure to nonfiction, fiction, drama, debate, poetry, and paired texts. Of course, they would be reading all of these amazing texts, but just as important, we'd use these magazines to teach necessary literacy skills.
Our students are English Language Learners and any opportunity to get them reading and to encourage a love of reading is so important.
I love finding alternate ways to engage students and to get them learning important reading and writing strategies. This project would do just that. I know their faces would light up each time we got a new magazine. The subscription also grants me (the teacher) access to a variety of resources tied to learning standards that correlate with the articles.
