Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I work in an inner city school district with students from difficult and challenging backgrounds. My student come from high poverty, single parent households with very little access to resources outside of the classroom. Even within the school walls, supplies are scarce and limited.

My students are predominately Spanish speaking learners; there is total of four different languages spoken in the classroom.

Each of my 22 students comes into school daily, eager to learn and understand the community and world around them. They are regularly faced with challenges of understanding the streets rather than understanding how becoming successful learners will enable them to achieve great success in their endeavors as adults. They do not have the resources available to them to further their understanding. The achievement gap within the school district continues to grow. My students do not have readily available texts to explore and utilize as they work to make gains in reading and writing.

My Project

Each of these books will be used in my classroom daily. Students will have access to a a variety of literature and texts to aid in their development as readers and writers. Students will be given ample opportunities to explore both fiction and non-fiction texts in order to understand story elements and use their new found reading comprehension strategies.

With a variety of books available to each student, my learners will have a better opportunity to connect with a text, learn and develop a love of literacy, become successful fluent readers in my classroom and utilize the skills needed to continue closing the achievement gap in our district and state.
