This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a kindergarten teacher in a newly opened, diverse charter school in New York. I have twenty-five eager and enthusiastic young readers in my classroom.
As a newly opened school, resources can be limited. My students are excited to become conventional, independent readers, but they need the support and resources to help jump start their early reading habits. My students love to read. They especially love gathering on the carpet for circle time and reading to one another. I strive to create a sense of safety and comfort for the students while they read. Many students sit back to back or lay their belly on the hard floor. This is uncomfortable and not inviting to little ones who want to read a book.
A couch to fill this big space for these little bodies would be an enormous help. A child sized couch for our reading area would help to create a special place that is warm and inviting for these early readers. A reading couch will encourage more students to visit the library, and invite them to curl up and read a good book. A couch would also help to give these students a sense of ownership and maturity.
With your help, my students will have a special place to read where they can be comfortable and relaxed. It may even encourage them to cozy up to a good book on their own couches at home! Your donation will help ensure that my students will develop a healthy relationship with reading!
