I teach in a 5th grade integrated co-teaching classroom. There are two teachers, 2 paraprofessionals, and 26 students. I have general education students, special education students, as well as English Language Learners. The students are performing on a variety of levels in all subjects and have different learning styles such as visual and auditory, which is why I need an assortment of resources to meet their needs. I work in a Title I, where the students come from low-income families. All of my students receive free lunch.
My students love to read a good book.
When they find a book they like they cannot put it down. They love to see their reading level improve from the beginning of the year until the end of the year. I try to provide them with as many enjoyable books as possible on their level.
My Project
This year within the classroom my co-teacher and I were able to do book clubs. I also ran the book and movie club within my school for children grades 3-5. All the books the students read this year they loved! The students were able to have great discussions with each other about the books they read.
I wanted to bring that joy to all the students!
All the students should have opportunity to read great books they may have not read. Next year (2019-2020), my school is departmentalizing. My co-teacher and I will be teaching three different classes for reading and writing. We are so happy to bring enjoyable books to many more students, but we need your help. In the classroom there is only a few copies of each book. My co-teacher and I would like to do class read aloud to teach our curriculum using these specific books. Students enjoy class read loud. This will allow them to continue to have great discussions and improve both their reading and writing skills.
