My students need additional flexible seating options in my classroom to help empower student choice, increase student engagement, and improve student participation.

My Students

I teach 3rd grade in Wisconsin. My school serves grades 3-5. My school is rural, with approximately 384 students. At my school, 5% have reduced-price lunch, and 48% have direct/free lunch.

I have 16 students in my 3rd grade class.

It is an even mixture of both boys and girls. They are a great class that is eager to learn new things. Our school is always working hard to provide the best educational opportunities possible for our students, but budgets are tight so teachers are often spending their own money on classroom supplies.

My Project

I am requesting a balance ball chair and a carpet for my students to sit on while they are in class. My classroom floor has no carpet, so it makes sitting/laying on the floor uncomfortable. A large area rug will give my students a comfortable space to sit/lay on as they do their work. The yoga chairs will be used a at a table for students to use as needed. I currently have a yoga chair at my desk and have seen the benefits of it. I am hopeful that the chairs will help my students that need help staying focused. Flexible seating allows my students to choose where and how they learn best. Children learn best when they are comfortable and engaged. The flexible seating allows students to focus in a quiet corner on their own or join a group of peers around a table to collaborate. Allowing the students to sit, stand, kneel or recline, work in a group or by themselves, empowers them to be happier and more successful. This project will allow me to provide additional seating options for my students. I feel that if I can make my classroom environment a little more stimulating and comfortable then my students will be more engaged and eager to learn.
