Distant But Always Together: Supplying the Remote Learner

My Students

The week before our school closed due to Covid-19, many families were rightfully worried about the health and wellbeing of their child. The decision to close schools was not made until Sunday evening, giving teachers and students no time to prepare for any sort of remote learning.

The week our school closed for students, the teachers came in to prepare for remote learning.

As a school, we were trying to gather materials for our students to pick up. Basic materials such as markers, crayons, glue, paper, and other supplies so they could have something to take home. However, it was revealed to us that one of the members in our school community tested positive for Covid-19. Our staff rushed to get everything together in that one day, and we were never able to give our students what they needed to take home.

We didn't even have the chance to say goodbye to each other properly in person. That was taken away from us unexpectedly and there may never be an opportunity for us to be together as a class again. The decision has been made to close schools for the remainder of the school year.

My Project

I want to be sure all my children have something at home to engage in the projects we are doing, as we learn together remotely. We meet every day on Google Meet, and have assignments on Google Classroom. We read stories, and have a daily doodling session along with arts and crafts.

I want to make sure our kids have the basic materials to engage in these projects, sets of books from their favorite series (Elephant and Piggie), and some snacks because food can be scarce for some of our families who may be experiencing financial hardships.

I WILL find a way to get these to my children.
