My sweet class is located in the middle of Richmond, Virginia. Although we are in the middle of the city, our school is like a mini oasis filled with art and nature. We are located right on an amazing park, within walking distance to a rushing creek and beautiful hiking trails. Our students come from all over the city, and in many cases this is the only green outdoor space they are able to get into.
This March our oasis was quickly taken from us, and we were all sent home to only see each other from a computer screen.
First grade is a very intense year for elementary students, and most of my class went from letter sounds and recognition to full readers. They have worked so hard to continue the momentum of the intensity of first grade, but it has been a struggle meeting virtually. The emotions of our entire class not being able to meet virtually, for a myriad of reasons, ran through our class big time. There were moments where we were excited about something new, frustrated with not understanding something, sad about missing each other, but we are lucky to share these feelings together.
My Project
In my classroom, our favorite times are sitting around the carpet together, listening to great literature. These pieces of literature are things we have used to form our community. This project would allow each of my students to take these memories home with them, as well as helping grow literacy.
In a world with so many unknowns, having these classroom memories will keep us safe and together, even when we're apart.
