This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I am one of four teachers who works in the transition program for young adults 18-21 year old with disabilities. A PPT (Planning and Placement Team) decides if the student is appropriate for the program. There are 35 students in the program, along with eight paraprofessionals. Some of the students have 2:1 paraprofessional support while others have general support.
Our job is to prepare our young adults for independent living in their community and to be successful.
There have varying exceptionalities and they have unique learning styles. Due to these different learning styles, they lack certain social skills, independent living skills along with self advocacy skills that impact their participation in society.
My Project
The two computers will provide access to their instructional materials, lessons, instructions, community meetings, one on one support with instructional staff and daily mindfulness activities. The computers won't be a substitute for
in-person learning, but will keep the students stay connected to their peers, teachers and other support staff while virtually attending community activities.
With the daily interactions via the computer hopefully students will have less issues with transition from in person to virtual and continue improving their social and emotional needs. The computers will let them to continue their academic and social lessons with support.
