My Students

My students are inquisitive, creative and compassionate. They thrive on social interactions and hands-on activities which promote productive struggle. Our school is located in a predominantly rural, low-income neighborhood with a considerable portion of the children being of native Hawaiian and/or Pacific Island ancestry. Even with the financial challenges impacting their lives, my students want to come to school and are excited to learn. They possess invincible grit when tackling new projects. They truly light up my life!

Many of my students and parents have shared the struggles they are having accessing and completing assignments at home because they lack the required supplies and materials.

Distance learning has created a barrier for my students. Some have digital access to materials. But, the youngest ones who require hands-on materials to support their learning are struggling because they are lacking basic necessities like pencils, pencil sharpeners, crayons, journals, scissors, glue, construction paper, math manipulatives and letter/number flashcards.

My Project

Our school has given each household a laptop if they didn’t have one and they are able to access free internet through May from Spectrum. Each grade has a Google Classroom set up which the kids can access and download work (if they have a printer). Otherwise, our school provides a hard copy packet for those who aren’t able to download materials. However, the youngest ones who require hands-on materials to support their learning are struggling because they are lacking basic necessities like pencils, pencil sharpeners, crayons, journals, scissors, glue, construction paper, math manipulatives, letter/number flashcards, and book bags.

Distance learning has shown the inequity between students across the nation including my students.

This project would help to address this inequity by providing book bags filled with hands-on materials my youngest students need to fully access distance learning. Be the equalizer for my students during this challenging time of distance learning!
