I am grateful to teach an inquisitive, empathetic, and hard-working group of 5th-graders in the heart of Hell’s Kitchen. Hailing from all over the world, my students are an incredibly diverse group of learners for various reasons. Some students were born and raised here in Manhattan while others have recently arrived to our country from the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Honduras, and Beijing. Not only are my students culturally diverse, but they are economically diverse as well. Furthermore, the broad range of academic abilities in my classroom requires me to differentiate my instruction to meet the needs of each child.
Despite our many differences, there is so much that we share in common.
All of my students enjoy finding success in school. Each of their faces lights up with the joy of learning when they are engaged in a task. Now that we only see each other virtually, video lessons are critical.
My Project
These materials will help me create engaging lessons while teaching from home. I will use the iPad to film lessons, video chat with students, and enhance the overall effectiveness of my teaching. In addition to immediate support, these resources will help me next school year when life returns to normal. My next group of kiddos will be grateful to have cozy and flexible seating options for our classroom space.
Student engagement plays a critical role in the healthy functioning of a classroom environment.
The materials in this project will help me engage my students both virtually and when we return to school in the fall.
