Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students, ages three to five and a half years old, are part of an inclusive pre-Kindergarten environment. They live in a multicultural city and for this reason, they are very diverse. They are diverse not only in their cultures and ethnic backgrounds, but also in their physical, cognitive, behavioral, and emotional learning abilities. Our school is part of a Title I district where at least 75% of students qualify for free or reduced-price meals.
My students' love for learning always amazes me.
They are curious and eager to learn new ideas through play-based, multi-sensory, hands-on activities. As a teacher, I am constantly striving to provide new materials and experiences that will allow them to grow in all areas of development. My ultimate goal is to provide a solid educational foundation and instill in them a lifetime love for learning.
My Project
This upcoming school year, my district plans to implement a hybrid model where the children will receive two days of in-person instruction and three days of virtual learning. As we continue to embark on this journey of distance learning, my goal is to create distance learning experiences that are engaging, relevant and fun! Since the children will not be able to physically engage with their peers on a daily basis, I thought it would be a great idea to have them adopt a pet to take home, learn about, care for and engage in meaningful play with.
Meaningful play is the most important way young children learn and gain essential knowledge and skills.
For this reason, I feel it is critical to create opportunities and environments that promote play, exploration and hands-on learning. In addition to incorporating their adopted pet into their play, I would like to base many learning and shared learning experiences on the children's pets. This includes reading with their pets, naming and drawing their pets, researching their habitats and what they like to eat, identifying their physical characteristics, creating stories about their pets etc. The possibilities are literally endless!
On virtual learning days, I would like to have the children share their ideas and research with one another. My goal with this is the children are able to learn about several different animals and their similarities and differences. They will also be able to learn several language, math and literacy skills as we count and compare them, write and sound out the letters in their names and engage in several graphing experiences.
I am extremely confident that the children will absolutely LOVE adopting their individual pets. These pets will offer many valuable learning opportunities and provide the children purpose and comfort during these difficult times.
