Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I work with special education students. They range in grade level from TK-5th grade. I have 28 students on my caseload and it is growing every day. My students' diagnoses/disabilities include Autism Spectrum Disorder, Attention Deficit Disorder, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Dyslexia, Optic Atrophy, Alternating Esotropia, Hyperopia, Astigmatism, Hearing Loss, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, Specific Learning Disability, and Emotional Disturbance.
My students have amazing attitudes despite their disabilities and everything they have to overcome in daily life.
They put a smile on their face every day and face a world that does not always treat them as they should. They all have their days when their undesired behaviors get the best of them but with support, the days are becoming fewer.
I have many students who have a less than functional home life. I have students from broken families, the foster care system, have at least one parent incarcerated, a restraining order on a parent or a parent that has passed away. My students deserve to feel safe and comfortable when they come to school.
My Project
Our school started with remote learning as we live in a high COVID-19 county. Unfortunately our county's cases of COVID-19 have not gone down enough for our schools to be able to open. My students have done well adapting to their new learning format but are tiring of my handful of online resources. I would love to be able to give my students new engaging lessons online. My students will be working from home on their IEP goals for what looks like the entirety of this school year. This project is to provide them with new distance learning that will keep them engaged and learning. Different lessons designed for online platforms that are fun and interactive will keep students involved in learning and promote progress on their goals. This project will help me to give my students more engaging work to keep moving forward.
