My students are high school kids who are also classified as diverse learners. The majority of the students at my school live in impoverished urban areas and come from a low income background. Traditional school is already difficult in their eyes- remote learning is almost impossible for some.
Remote learning has been extremely challenging, as many of my students require a different type of instruction than I can provide through a basic video meeting.
The students need concrete examples, expansive modeling, and clear visuals. It is not impossible- but it is a large lift with the small amount of technology within my home. I hope this project is funded to assist in the instruction and learning of my students.
My Project
I am currently a special education teacher within the Chicago Public Schools district looking to find the best ways to reach and teach my students. I work with students in grades 9-12 in subjects that expand across all disciplines. My school, LMSA, is a selective enrollment high school with rigorous assessments and expectations.
All of my students are classified as diverse learners, which means they need additional instruction and support- especially in writing.
The tools requested will allow me to live edit their documents while providing targeted and direct instruction through modeling while they learn remotely. These tools will also be utilized within my classroom once we return to the traditional school model.
In my virtual classroom, I am able to screen share to provide modeling to my students- but it takes away the ability to gage understanding as I am unable to see their reaction, questions, or just general confusion. The projection of a document camera would greatly benefit my instruction and enhance their learning. The ability to write on my screen would also add as a further visual guidance opposed to a lengthy written explanation.
A typical lesson in my traditional classroom includes creating, drafting, and editing different types of writing. Diverse learners need strong visuals and manipulatives to conceptualize a lesson and expectations. A doc camera and touch screen Chromebook will help students to see correct editing techniques in real time- not just a written explanation comment on a Google Doc. This will also allow students the ability to record on their own example or piece of writing at the same time.
