Johanna, Aerial, Sage, Lance and Cresencio are all students in my Anatomy and Physiology classes. As we have been studying the different systems of the body, they (along with all my other students) have been very enthusiastic about actually SEEING what happens on the inside of organisms.
Our supply closet has a few random preserved specimens, but my students were more enthusiastic to learn all together. As we were looking for funding opportunities, they were very excited about getting to create their own project for DonorsChoose. They sat down and brainstormed a list of supplies that would be needed to complete their dream dissection unit.
I think the biggest benefit for students will be their ability to EXPERIENCE anatomy. I think this is when students are able to make lasting connections because they are more engaged and have a real-life example to tie content to. Students will also have to work in partners which will help them build communication skills as well as responsibility to another person. In terms of Anatomy, students will gain valuable knowledge in the interdependence of organ systems within an organism.
In Their Own Words
Our project idea is to obtain fetal pig specimens for dissection so students can acquire a deeper knowledge on how organisms function on the inside. This will benefit the students in numerous ways. Our goal is to ensure that the students understand life's creations.
In our classroom, everything is fast-paced and exciting. Once we get our materials and supplies, we divide into pairs. We will supply them with a dissecting kit, a pig and safety equipment. Each class will have 3 students leaders what can be a resource to students as they work. We will work with our teacher before hand to make sure we are prepared for common questions that may arise. We have been talking about this for a while and we all know it is going to be a huge success.
This is important to our school community (and us) because it gives us great experience that will give us more knowledge. It will be fun and exciting. Everyone will be talking about it and it will make students more interested and invested in science.
