Dissecting Food Webs: Owl Pellets

My Project

My students are curious, hands-on learners who thrive when they're able to explore the natural world through real-world applications. They come from diverse backgrounds, and show up each day ready to engage and discover.

This project will provide my students with owl pellets to dissect during our unit on ecosystems and food webs.

Dissecting owl pellets is an exciting and educational way to help students understand the role of consumers in an ecosystem and how energy flows through a food chain.

Students will receive a sanitized owl pellet to dissect using tweezers and charts to identify the bones of small animals like mice and voles. Through this experience, students will learn how scientists gather information about animal diets and habitats, and they’ll practice scientific skills like observation, classification, and data analysis.

With your help, my students will have a memorable, interactive learning experience that brings ecology to life. They'll think like scientists, collaborate like researchers, and develop a deeper appreciation for the natural world.
